2023 Pantone Color of the Year: Viva Magenta

It’s time to celebrate - a new Color of the Year is here! Pantone’s yearly pick can influence design trends around the globe, and weddings are definitely included on that list. So what color will we be seeing more of in the year to come? Pantone announced that 2023 is going to be all about Viva Magenta, a crimson red tone perfectly balanced between warm and cool.

More About Viva Magenta

Viva Magenta is a bold color with a description to match: brave, fearless, powerful, rebellious, empowering, and electrifying. As Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director for the Pantone Color Institute, describes, “It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint. Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life.”

To Pantone, Viva Magenta is “a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.” Pretty spot on for a wedding day if you ask us! It is a powerful color, for sure, so how do couples incorporate it into their wedding design?

What to Consider

Viva Magenta is extremely versatile, and this quite impressive range is all thanks to its balance of tones. It is both striking enough to be the star of the show, but also shines as a supporting character when paired with other bright colors. Therefore, it will be highly important to consider your overall theme and the scale in which you use it. For the most timeless approach, consider one of two options: adding in Viva Magenta as an accent color, using it cautiously in small and thoughtful ways. Or, be intentionally adventurous and fill the rest of your color palette with equally strong choices from the color wheel.

For example, if you are having a traditional wedding, consider pairing it sparingly with soft neutrals and metallics. Or, up the brightness factor and try matching it with fun yellows, pinks, and oranges for a more modern affair. Pair it with soft complementary blues and greens for natural venues, or darker blues and greens for a moodier vibe. Whether you pair it with cool tones, warm tones, or a mixture of both, don’t forget to consider the colors found at your venue and the season you are getting married in to make sure it all works together. And, have fun experimenting!

Ways to Incorporate

Remember, this doesn’t mean you have to go straight for the solid Viva Magenta tablecloths. In a lot of cases, a room full of magenta linens is going to be overkill. There’s so many creative ways to play with color, and even the smallest use when mixed with other colors can have the right impact! Here are some great places to incorporate Viva Magenta into your wedding:

  • Florals: While it may be an obvious choice, color is rooted in nature. And with a color so bold, it never hurts to ground the color through natural elements like florals. If you’re looking for smaller pops, consider an accent floral in your bouquet, the boutonnieres, or hair pin, bud vases on your reception tables, or even the silk ribbon on your bouquet.

  • Beauty: Especially for fall and winter weddings, a bold lip, subtle blush, or set of nails in Viva Magenta could tie the whole design together.

  • Decor: Colorful pillar candles and dinner napkins are always a go-to. But we also love the new trend of fruit being incorporated into your wedding decor. When used tastefully, pomegranates, figs, pears, plums, and cherries could add the perfect pop to a table or cutting cake.

  • Dessert: The possibilities don’t end with magenta florals on your cake. Consider sweets topped with jam, a cake with berry filling or raspberry trim, anything red velvet, or a dessert table with raspberry-colored chocolates or jelly donuts!

  • Attire: Another safe bet! Besides bridesmaid dresses and pocket squares, think fun socks for the groom and his men, a colorful pair of heels, or even a delicate embroidered detail on the veil.

  • Stationery and Signage: Printed items are always a fun place to get creative, bring in lots of color, and solidify your color palette to guests.

  • Signature Cocktails: A delicious way to create a small yet impactful pop of color as they are carried around the room. Or, serve your drinks with custom cocktail napkins.

  • Photo Booth: Throw some fun Viva Magenta hats, boas, and oversized sunglasses onto the prop table!

Color is an unspoken language. Design pros often use color to tell a story and communicate through the emotions that color stirs within us. When it comes to your wedding, color can have a huge impact on the feel of the day and bring cohesion to your wedding theme and design. We can’t wait to see the creativity that comes from using Viva Magenta this year!
